Description
Ametrine (natural bi-color Quartz)Ametrine is the naturally occurring bi colored variety of Quartz that is only found at the Anahi Mine in Bolivia. Some material is marked as coming from Brazil, but in reality, the rough is sometimes shipped from Bolivia across the border (which is only about 40 km away) to be processed in Brazil. There is no reported discovery of Ametrine anywhere in Brazil, and the Bolivian Ametrine remains the best and frankly ONLY commercially available material
Ametrine is the naturally occurring bi-colored variety of Quartz that is only found at the Anahi Mine in Bolivia. Some material is marked as coming from Brazil, but in reality, the rough is sometimes shipped from Bolivia across the border (which is only about 40 km away) to be processed in Brazil. There is no reported discovery of Ametrine anywhere in Brazil, and the Bolivian Ametrine remains the best and frankly ONLY commercially available material on the market. The most alluring aspect of Ametrine is the fact that it shows distinct purple (AMEthyst) and yellow (ciTRINE) zoning where the purple sections are situated along the positive {r} rhombohedral faces, and the alternating yellow sections are positioned under the negative {z} rhombohedral faces. This growth forms an alternating "radiation" pattern of purple and yellow triangles when viewed down the c axis.
This particular gem is a superb example of faceted Ametrine as it is not only large, but it has excellent color saturation, eye-clean clarity and unique concave faceting. The name of the cut on this stone is a "Quantum Round", and it has some extra brilliance due to the fact that the facets on the pavilion are concave and actually are cut INTO the underside of the stone. This creates a dazzling effect and allows a gem like Quartz - which doesn't have a terribly high refractive index - to really sparkle in even moderate lighting.
Rarely do we have gems with such fine clarity, beautiful distinct bi-colored appearance and unique cutting. This one would make a nice addition to any gem collection or it could be set to create a lovely piece of jewelry. It has come to my attention that the mine is not currently in production of this material and the market has quickly "dried up". Don't miss this opportunity to own a unique, colorful, large, naturally occurring gemstone that is only found in one place in the world.
