Red Leaf Fish (Taenianotus triacanthus)Overview
The Red Leaf Fish, also known as the Leaf Scorpionfish, is a fascinating and unusual reef species that mimics a drifting leaf to ambush prey. With its vibrant red, pink, or yellow hues and unique shape, this slow-moving ambush predator adds intrigue and color to any peaceful predatory or display aquarium.
OriginFound throughout the Indo-Pacific region, including Indonesia, Fiji, and the Great Barrier Reef, Taenianotus triacanthus inhabits coral reefs and rocky areas where it camouflages among rubble, sponges, and soft corals.
FeedingA carnivore that prefers live foods such as small shrimp initially but can adapt to frozen meaty foods like mysis, krill, and chopped fish once established. Feed once daily, ensuring food items are appropriately sized.
Tank MatesBest kept with peaceful fish too large to be eaten, such as tangs, angelfish, and wrasses. Avoid small fish and crustaceans, which may be viewed as prey, as well as aggressive tank mates that may harass it.
AggressionGenerally peaceful and sedentary. It relies on camouflage for protection and rarely shows aggression toward other tank mates.
Experience LevelRecommended for intermediate aquarists. Hardy once acclimated but requires careful feeding and a calm environment to thrive.
